Natural Timber Care

Our handcrafted live-edge, free-form and natural timber creations are made from genuine solid timber. Every piece is unique and may naturally respond to changes in its environment — that's not a flaw, it's proof you own something real.

Caring for Your Piece

• Keep it away from prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade and dry out the timber over time.
• Avoid placing it close to fireplaces, wood burners, heaters or other strong heat sources.
• Avoid excessive moisture and very dry environments — timber likes a steady, moderate atmosphere, much like we do.
• Sudden or extreme changes in temperature and humidity can cause timber to expand, contract or move.
• Dust with a soft, dry cloth. If it needs more than that, a lightly damp cloth is fine — just dry it off straight away and avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
• If your piece has an oil & Wax finish, a light reapplication every so often  of teak Wax will maintain the lustre of the timber.  If its been some time since the (a good quality furniture or orange oil works well) will keep it looking its best and help protect the timber.
• Minor checking, movement or small cracks can occur naturally over time. This isn't a fault — it's part of the individual character of genuine solid timber, and every mark tells you it's the real thing.

A Note on Different Timbers

We work mainly in Macrocarpa, along with Swamp Kauri, Black Wattle and Cypress — and each has its own personality:

• Macrocarpa is a hardy, forgiving timber, but like most solid wood it can develop small natural checking over time — this is completely normal and part of its charm.
• Swamp Kauri is ancient timber, preserved in the earth for thousands of years, and generally very stable once milled and finished — though it still deserves the same sensible care as any solid wood.
• Black Wattle has a beautiful grain but moves a little more than some other timbers, so it's best kept indoors, away from damp areas or big swings in humidity.
• Cypress is naturally stable with a lovely natural sheen, and holds up well with just the occasional light oiling.

Whatever the species, the same basic rules apply: sensible placement, steady conditions, and a little occasional care.

With that in mind, your handcrafted timber creation can be enjoyed for many years — and will only grow more beautiful with age.
